San Juan boy dies while getting help for family after rollover crash
A 7-year-old San Juan boy died Thursday after flagging down help for his grandparents who were involved in a rollover crash.
The boy, identified as Joey Garza, was ejected from a truck on I-84 in Elder County, Utah, according to Utah Highway Patrol.
The grandfather "drifted off the roadway, over-corrected and rolled," according to a news release.
Garza was able to flag down two drivers who stopped at the scene. Witnesses told state police the boy had a seizure and was not breathing after he collapsed.
Garza's grandmother sustained critical injuries to her head and was airlifted to a Utah hospital. The 10-year-old girl sitting in the backseat and the 66-year-old man who was driving were not seriously injured.
Authorities stated that the boy was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the fatal crash. It's believed fatigue was a contributing factor.
Garza's grandparents are Edcouch residents who left Texas on Wednesday.
They were taking a trip to Washington in hopes of spending time with the children's father
